2-4 Aviation Battalion Families Have Shopping Day in Georgetown
Family members of soldiers based at Fort Hood came to Georgetown on Saturday, August 16 for a shopping day at Wolf Ranch Town Center. The event was for families of the 2-4 General Service Aviation Battalion. The 576-member unit deployed to Iraq in June.
Earlier this year, the battalion was adopted by the City of Georgetown, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce, and Georgetown ISD, as well as and local businesses and churches.
Wives and family members of the 2-4 GSAB were greeted at Wolf Ranch by Mayor George Garver and Mayor Pro Tem Pat Berryman, as well as Chamber of Commerce members and City employees.

Businesses at Wolf Ranch provided discount coupons for the family members who attended. While the spouses did back-to-school shopping at Wolf Ranch, childcare for 20 children was provided by members of the First Baptist Church of Georgetown.
The 2-4 Aviation Battalion will be in Iraq for a deployment of 15 to 18 months. The battalion includes eight companies with a wide range of duties, including command and control, air assault, medical evacuations, helicopter maintenance and repair, air traffic control, unmanned aerial vehicle surveillance, food services, and supply and logistics. Seven of the companies in the battalion fly or provide support for Black Hawk and Chinook helicopters. 2-4 Aviation is one battalion of the 4th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army.
Special T-shirts featuring the 2-4 Aviation Battalion insignia are on sale for $10 at the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce at 100 Stadium Drive, or at the Visitor Information Center at 101 W. Seventh Street. Proceeds will be used to support the 2-4 Aviation Battalion soldiers and their families.
Other outings and support activities are planned for the family members of the soldiers. In addition, activities to support the soldiers in the unit are ongoing.

I would like to know why when I inquired about having my husbands unit adopted, I was informed that the City of Georgetown does not participate in these activities? Does a family member from the 2-4 AVN work for the city?
Yvette Spielman,
Last year, then-Mayor of Georgetown Gary Nelon and other members of the City Council were invited to meet with officials at Fort Hood. After several meetings, units from the 4th Infantry Division were matched with cities in Williamson County. Georgetown was matched with the 2-4 Aviation Battalion for the Adopt-a-Unit Program. I’m not aware of any City of Georgetown employees or family members in the 2-4 Aviation Battalion, or that this was a factor in assigning units. Also, I don’t know who it was at the City that spoke with you, but I’d be happy to talk with you further about the program. Since it just got started, many City employees may have been unaware of it.
